This can be caused by high iron or manganese levels in the water. Depending on the levels we recommend a water softener for lower levels, and an Air and Sand filter for higher levels.
If you have green or blue staining – indicates the presence of copper – so most likely have acidic water and it is leaching your copper or brass fittings. Sometimes the water source has copper in it and should be removed for health and safety.
